The novel opens with Jenni going for a group of teenagers out late into the evening to witness a comet with an astronomy class. Once the comet passes, it causes a rift with time sending Jenni and her students returning to the Oklahoma plains to 1895.

Marshal Rafe D'Angelico and his brother, Cris, are killed when their friend, Josiah Kemp, shoots on them several coins. Rafe becomes an angel and meet his mentor, Beck Jansen. Rafe and Beck possess a mission - keep Jenni and her teenager charges protected from the devil, aka, Milo.

When Rafe meets Jenni, he realizes she's the mysterious woman he desired while he would be a man. The chemistry between the couple is combustible. When Beck will not give Rafe solid answers about his angelic status, Rafe risks everything being human so he can be around Jenni.

After consummating their love, Rafe's angelic brother, Cris, appears and then warn them that Jenni may be the one Milo is after. Rafe realizes he's a selection - embrace his status being an angel to help keep Jenni safe, or embrace his humanity and face certain death from Milo.

Pierson's writing is crisp and simple to read. The plot is creative, leaving people in suspense most of the novel. Her dialogue is authentic, capturing the feel of the late 1800's. Pierson's descriptions effortlessly paint the history of the novel, while using a good economy of words. The reader can easily visualize the setting.

Pierson's characters are interesting. Rafe is really a stand up guy who embodies the heroism with the late 1800's lawman. His loyalty and integrity are endearing. Jenni proves herself to become gutsy heroine, even following Cris in to a rushing current of water when he's injured. The supporting cast is fun to get know. Contrary, toward the conclusion, it seems like almost a given by Cris and Beck that Rafe must face Milo completely, also it gives a predictable ending for an unpredictable story.
